Investigating Teachers’ Perception on Teaching Pragmatics for Secondary School Students (A case Study: Secondary School Teachers, Dongola Locality)

This study aims to investigate teachers’ perceptions of teaching pragmatics in English as a foreign language at secondary schools in Dongola locality. The study is concerned with issues specifically related to teaching pragmatics. The study used the analytical descriptive method and questionnaire was designed for the purpose of data collection, total number of (36) English teachers from secondary schools in Dongola locality have been surveyed. The findings revealed that, half of the secondary school teachers are not well-aware of how pragmatics and pragmatics teaching. Most of secondary school teachers do not apply their knowledge of pragmatics teaching. English teachers in secondary Schools at Dongola locality want their students to speak English like native speakers. English teachers in secondary Schools at Dongola locality teach pragmatic knowledge when students reach a certain level of language proficiency. The study recommended that English teachers at secondary schools should teach pragmatic knowledge when their students reach a certain level of language proficiency. Native speakers of English should understand the culture of speakers of English as a second language. The textbooks were used at the schools should contain more adequate pragmatic information. English Teachers at secondary Schools should teach different types of pragmatic.
